The Nightingale Center
Dr. Lois Nightingale has been doing individual, family, couple and child therapy at her current location since 1990. At that time the facility was owned by Yorba Hills Psychiatric Hospital, where Dr. Nightingale pioneered a Postpartum Depression unit where mothers could be treated for serious psychiatric symptoms like depression and anxiety, while still providing care for their infants. She also founded and directed The New Mother Counseling Center and ran groups for mothers with their babies and children.
The facility was purchased by Charter Behavioral Health Systems in 1994. Dr. Nightingale was the director of their Chemical Dependency program to treat addiction and disorders of impulse control. The program included an intense inpatient program and a follow up outpatient partial program. The focus was providing resources for sobriety, dual diagnosis considerations, finding more productive ways to coping with emotions and a 12 Step focus. Family members were encouraged to participate in Family Group and regularly attend Ala-non.
In 2000 Eastern Star purchased the hospital and medical suites. The hospital was converted into a retirement facility for Eastern Star Members. The medical suites were leased to health care practitioners. Very few of the psychiatric practitioners who had made rounds at the two previous hospitals remained.
But because of her commitment to the community Dr. Nightingale stayed on. After 27 years of bring services to Yorba Linda, she now sees second and third generation clients at her office. The warm residential neighborhood and manicured park-like gardens give the single story medical building a unique feel.
The Nightingale Center now provides counseling services for depression, anxiety, relationships issues, parenting, grief and adolescent concerns, along with acupuncture services. The staff includes psychologists, Marriage, Family Child Therapists, and an Acupuncturist. All are dedicated to bringing the communities of Orange County the best possible services to enhance lives.
Dr. Nightingale knew she wanted to be a psychologist at a very young age. She was licensed as a Marriage Family Child Therapist in California at 25 and a clinical Psychologist in California at 26. Along with her private practice she speaks at conferences, authors books and journal articles, and does media interviews on parenting, depression, divorce and other psychological topics. She has been interviewed by Anderson Cooper, Tom Brokaw, Susan Powder, Jerry Springer, CNN’s Soyna Freeman and numerous others. She has been a faculty member with La Leche League International and the Holmes School of Ministry. She has testified as an expert witness in criminal and family law cases, and has done psychological testing for children and adults since 1982.
She is the proud mother of two wonderful children, and she enjoys traveling abroad. For relaxation, she races dragon boats and outrigger canoes. She believes that her enthusiasm for life is an important part of being an effective therapist.
